During some searching the internet, I came across the Digital North Carolina Blog about McDowell County Schools Scrapbooks. Volume 1 begins with what looks like assignments by students about Jane Gracey Logan, whose husband was massacred by the Indians around 1780 west of Old Fort. The volume continue to outline the growth of schools in the county by Miss Harriette Greenlee. The scrapbooks can be located online at the Digital North Carolina Blog.
